Last week crews swung in the last piece of the span for a $26.8 million dollar pedestrian bridge. Which has one of the longest self anchored pedestrian suspension spans in the world; the 500-foot bridge is designed by San Diego architects Safdie Rabines.
The City of San Diego has to build an overhead span for pedestrians in order to reopen the public walkway across Harbor at Park Boulevard which closed as a byproduct of the Petco Park Project. The bridge will unite Downtown San Diego’s Urban core with a safe pedestrian crossing with easy access to the Convention Center, Petco Park, restaurants, shopping and more. What can beat the “one of a kind” view of a San Diego Downtown loft or condo owner at night time with so much to offer?

Broadway Pier Cruise Ship Terminal, one of The Port of San Diego’s largest public work projects is advertising for construction bids. The building will have a baggage claim area, a passenger waiting area, and a ticketing office. There will also be a station for customs and Homeland Security, a passenger disembarking area, and baggage handling. The building may be used for public events, and local public art will be included in the project.
To meet the demands of the Port’s growing cruise business a new terminal is needed. In 2008, there were 297 cruise calls, compared to 2007, with only 181 calls. Two cruise vessels at once can be handled by the Port’s main cruise ship terminal located at the B Street Pier. On days when there are more than two cruise ships in port, the vessels use Broadway Pier as an additional berth. The Port needs to build an additional cruise ship terminal to avoid losing business to other port cities that have more modern features.
The project includes a 52,000 square feet building and demolition and removal of an embarkation platform that is on the pier. The building is planned as a steel, metal-framed structure with photovoltaic panels and sustainable materials and equipment. We at 92101 Urban Living are very excited about this new project and the value it will create for Downtown San Diego Real Estate in the Columbia District. Lured by increases in prices, as 92101 Urban Living talked about in an earlier blog, Slight increase in Median Home Prices, but also government incentives like interest rates and tax brakes, first time buyers are finally rushing in. Housing sales are increasing in some of the hardest markets. So, why is this happening? In this market, bargain deals attract cash rich people and foreclosures are being dumped. If it is the right deal, why wait? Shoppers are getting interested again now when prices have fallen , improving the balance between buyers and sellers. The half mile stroll along San DiegoBay’s North Embarcadero in Downtown San Diego has once again been improved with 31 new uniquely designed sculptural trees in the Urban Trees Exhibit. This is the fifth year for this rotating exhibit, which is a part of the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Program. Last year 92101 Urban Living talked about this project in general and wrote a blog about it “San Diego Urban Trees“.Sculpted with a variety of designs and materials this exhibit is giving San DiegoBay artistic life and color and invites city residents and visitors to walk along and enjoy the creative designs. Some of the designs are very clever. There is one with a kaleidoscope and another one with bicycle wheels made out of fans. What else could be more relaxing and inspiring than taking the family out for a walk for this unique experience?Click here to see the Tree Gallery. The following link showcases information about this current exhibit of Urban Trees.
