The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Downtown San Diego Library was held wednesday at 11th Ave and Park Blvd in the East Village/Ballpark District. A lot of people showed up for the ceremony which surprised Mayor Jerry Sanders who held the welcoming speech. The Girl Scout Troop #5912 from San Ysidro sang the National Anthem and speakers included Christine Kehoe, member California State Senate, Kevin Faulconer, Council President Pro Team, City of San Diego and Richard Barrera, President of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees.

The new central library will be situated right next to Park Terrace, Icon and the New Jefferson Law School and will serve as a new public regional center for learning and literacy, offering public access to a collection of more than 1.3 million items. It will also help close the “digital divide” with more than 400 workstations, available laptops, spaces for teaching the use of new technology and free Wi-Fi access.
