Cortez Hill is the residential area of Downtown San Diego located above A St and between Front st and 10th (W/E), and derives its name from both it’s topography (actually located on a hill), and the famous El Cortez hotel.
The neighborhood itself is becoming a highly sought after because of its quiet atmosphere, while still being just a short walk or cab ride to the hustle and bustle of the Gaslamp. The neighborhood itself seems like a bit of an oasis from the rest of Downtown, with its tree lined streets and parks. Tweet street park on Date St between 7th and 10th is the place to be in the evenings where many residents bring their dogs on their nightly walks.
With over 10 condo and apartment buildings in such a small neighborhood, Cortez Hill is very densely populated with residential options. Cortez Hill Condos make up 7 of the 11 residential options and range from upscale, luxury buildings like Discovery, to mid-rise complexes such as The Mills. Most units in the Cortez Hill area enjoy an elevated view compared to the rest of Downtown San Diego thanks to being on top of the hill. A 14th floor unit in Cortez Hill would be similar to a 28th floor view down in the East Village or Marina. Litigation continues to be a bit of a slow down for the sales of Cortez HIll Condos, with Aria, The Mills, and Aloft all working through their legal issues.
