5 Things You Need to Do in Downtown San Diego This Spring

By Mike in Things to Do in downtown San Diego with 0 Comments

If you purchased Core San Diego real estate just before the spring, congratulations: you picked the perfect season to unpack, get settled in, and enjoy one of the best housing markets in the United States. Spring is one of the nicest seasons in San Diego, and here are five ways you can enjoy it even more.

1. Take a Garden Tour in Balboa Park

If you enjoy nature, sunny days, culture, and family activities, you will likely spend many weekends at Balboa Park, one of the prettiest spots in Southern California. During spring, stop by the park’s visitor center on Saturday mornings at 10am to participate in the free tour of the magnificent Rose Garden as well as the Alcázar Garden. Between these two botanical wonders, you will be treated to more than a hundred rose species.

2. Check Out Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo

As its name implies, Butterfly Jungle is filled with the most colorful and aesthetic members of the order Lepidoptera. This hidden jungle within the zoo is carefully maintained by botanists and phytologists who effectively recreate a rain forest habitat for thousands of butterflies and more than a hundred exotic birds. If you are the romantic type, you will want to bring your special someone along.

3. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

San Diego really gets into the spirit of this cultural celebration, which remembers the courageous Battle of Puebla and the substantial Mexican-American heritage in the United States. In 2017, you will be able to participate in prelude to the 30th anniversary of the Old Town celebration of Cinco de Mayo, a free festival considered to be one of the most representative of Mexican culture in this special day. The food alone is amazing, but you will also be able to enjoy folkloric music,  dance performances, street theater, and a variety of activities for children.

4. Spend a Day at the Mission Federal ArtWalk

San Diego’s Little Italy district is not limited to Italian restaurants, cafés, and markets. On April 28th, the Mission Federal ArtWalk festival kicks off its annual two-day celebration, which brings out paintings and sculptures that compete for attention next to live music, food tastings, and much more. A few weeks later, the Sicilian Festival takes place in this same district, but the activities, gastronomy, and celebrations showcase the culture of the southern Mediterranean regions of Italy.

5. Attend a Concert at Humphreys by the Bay

This annual series of live music performances will feature the legendary Willie Nelson in late April 2017, followed by Sheryl Crow a few weeks later. The venue for these concerts is located along Shelter Island Drive, right in between the landmark Humphreys Restaurant and the Half Moon Inn. The best deal is to enjoy the concerts along with an exclusive dinner in the elegant restaurant.

This is just a small sampling of the fun things you can do in or near downtown San Diego this spring, and there are fun things to do in the area all year long.
