Things to Do in Downtown San Diego During Comic-Con This Year

Downtown San Diego has once again set the stage for the 2019 edition of the Comic Convention International, better known as San Diego Comic-Con. From July 17th to the 21st, the San Diego Convention Center will become the most important center of pop culture celebration in the world, welcoming more than 130,000 visitors. What makes this event so significant is the way it’s naturally progressed from a gathering of comic book collectors to a festival featuring the best in science fiction, fantasy, and superhero storytelling by means of visual and digital representation.

Given the prominence of this convention, getting a coveted badge can be difficult, and this is something comic book and pop culture fans have learned to live with over the years. Nonetheless, many of them still visit downtown San Diego during Comic-Con for the purpose of partaking in various peripheral events and soaking up the atmosphere, and those who own downtown San Diego real estate have the additional advantage of not having to pay high hotel prices. With this in mind, here are a few things you can do around downtown San Diego to help you get in the Comic-Con spirit.

Comic-Con Art Show at the Hyatt

Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol were among the first major American visual artists who recognized comic books as being part of a modern fine arts movement, and this elucidation is at the heart of the Comic-Con Art Show, which returns to the Manchester Grand Hyatt this year with a focus on the work of the late Will Eisner, inventor of the graphic novel genre. The show runs parallel to the convention, and it can be experienced at the Grand Hall of the Hyatt.

A Lecture About Comics and the Law

The Lindley Lecture on Law and Comics, which this year will take place at the San Diego Central Library from to 4pm to 5pm on July 16th, is highly recommended to graphic artists, producers, and content creators who wish to learn about intellectual property issues surrounding their professional and creative fields.

Rave of Thrones at Omnia

On July 18th, one of the best Comic-Con afterparty events will be held at the Omnia Nightclub on 6th Avenue. Starting at 9pm, DJ Kristian Nairn, better known as Hodor from the violent HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, will spin a set of dark electronic dance music. Tickets start at $20, but a better deal is the $50 VIP pass, which includes a bar card.

Hello Kitty Food Truck at Petco Park

The cutest kitten in the world of Japanese animation will hold court at the Interactive Zone of Petco Park during Comic-Con. In the past, the Hello Kitty café has been one of the major offsite highlights of the convention because of the creative and colorful snacks served. While the Hello Kitty café may seem like an attraction for children, it should be noted that serious merchandise collectors will have a chance to score items released exclusively for Comic-Con.
