Downtown San Diego Taco Shops

Whether you live in a ranch house out in Jamul or just bought a spacious Downtown San Diego loft, one thing all San Diego residents share is the love for a great taco shop. If you’re new to the Downtown neighborhood and looking for a few suggestions, give the following spots a try.

Mexican Fiesta

Located in the heart of Little Italy San Diego, Mexican Fiesta is a beacon for burrito lovers from every surrounding neighborhood. There’s nowhere to sit and eat, but the food is affordable (two people can eat for around $10), and some foodies claim the carne asada burrito is the best ever, but we’ll let you decide. Hours are limited (8am-4pm Monday-Friday, 9am-2pm Saturday) and it’s cash only.

Taco Express

Around the corner from Mexican Fiesta, you’ll find Taco Express, another favorite among Little Italy residents. The hole-in-the-wall spot has a few places to sit, a line out the door oftentimes, and some of the most authentic Mexican food available this side of the border. Favorites include the fish tacos, the street tacos, and the California burrito.

Michos

Smack dab in the middle of the Gaslamp District San Diego, Michos serves up delicious dishes and earned a reputation as one of the best-kept secrets in Downtown San Diego. Devotees say Michos serves up the best tacos, period, but diners really can’t go wrong with any menu selection. Don’t let the locale fool you, Michos is tucked away inside a club, which doesn’t affect the flavor of the food but could change the vibe of your experience if you head over later at night.

Lolita’s

On the fringe of the ever-expanding East Village near Petco Park, Lolitas rounds out the list. Known for the carne asada fries, Lolitas has been a go-to for residents and business professionals working nearby since it opened. Prices are a little higher than average, but portions don’t disappoint and there are a few brews on tap. If you go for a quick bite before a game, however, plan to stand in a line outside the door.

The variety of dining options is just one of the many reasons properties in Downtown are swooped up left and right.
