While we usually focus on downtown San Diego real estate and local happening, how could we overlook racing season? There’s no better place to be on Friday, July 15, than the magnificent, historic Del Mar Racetrack for the fun and fanciful Opening Day festivities. Bing Crosby personally greeted the very first guest when the racetrack opened in 1937, and Del Mar remained home to the Hollywood elite for decades. Nowadays, Opening Day is the summer spot to see and be seen.
For $30 per person, you get admission to the Stretch Run (the area west of the finish line) as well as access to the trackside cabana area. Attendees can also enjoy gourmet food trucks, a beer garden, photo booths, and a gaming area. Other ticket options are available, including reserved seating, box seating, and trackside dining.
Don’t be discouraged if you’re not a racing buff. The track offers a newcomers seminar, held at the Plaza de Mexico one hour before the first race. You will learn about handicapping, how to understand the odds, and get valuable racing tips.
No Opening Day is complete without the hat contest. The bigger the better–although there is a category for the more demure fascinators. There are multiple categories with a total of $5,000 in prize money being given away. Just make sure to register online if you want to participate.
There is truly something for everyone on Opening Day. Gates open at 11:30am and the first race is at 2pm. The earlier you arrive, the better. The freeway gets jammed up and it will be frustrating to get there late AND have to park far away. Get there early, have a drink, and get ready for a fun-filled day.
