Where to Celebrate St. Patty’s Day

By Mike in Things to Do|Urban Lifestyle with 0 Comments

San Diego will soon be serving up corned beef and cabbage and wearing 50 shades of green. Here’s how to join the laughter and fun in and near Downtown San Diego.

St. Patty’s Day Parade and Irish Festival

March 12

Get ready to sing, clap, jig, and eat at this festive Irish fete! The streets of San Diego will host thrilling floats, antique cars, and marching bands. Young spectators can take part in face painting, rides, games, a play, and art display. The Celtic Village will portray early Irish history through storytelling, crafts, song, and dance.

Live music precedes the parade at 9am in the Beer Gardens. At 9:45am, you’ll witness a rousing flag ceremony at Sixth and Juniper Streets. The parade kicks off at 10:30am, starting at Fifth Avenue. Honored guests include the reigning Miss Colleen, Smiling Irishman, and representatives from Ireland. Folk singers and music groups will provide live entertainment while festivalgoers check out craft vendors and sample Irish food.

The Wizard of Oz

March 15, 17, 18, 19

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City with Dorothy and her friends. Broadway San Diego brings this captivating adaptation of the screenplay to the Civic Theatre in the Core District, and the show includes both the original songs and new tunes.

St. Patty’s Day Fare

March 17, 2016

For authentic Irish fare, jig your way over to Dublin Square in the Gaslamp Quarter. Reflecting Irish heritage, the taproom replicates a 19th-century public house. The lounge resembles a Victorian bar parlor, elegantly furnished with sofas. An original fireplace casts a soft glow, as do the ornate stained-glass windows. During St. Patty’s, enjoy authentic Irish music and food, including corned beef and cabbage.

Shamrock Block Party

March 17, 2016

Now in its 22nd year, ShamROCK is one of the largest Irish parties on the West Coast. Enjoy dancers, bands, and a 150-foot Irish pub that will serve green beer and Irish whiskey. Proceeds benefit the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation.
