5 Things to Take with You on the Ferry to Coronado Island

By Mike in Things to Do in downtown San Diego with 0 Comments

Sailing across the San Diego Bay to Coronado Island is one of the most interesting experiences in Southern California for both visitors and residents who own real estate in Marina San Diego. This voyage is a must on a sunny day, and it is a paradise for those who enjoy sightseeing, hiking, bike riding, and relaxing. To make the most out of your ferry experience between San Diego and Coronado, be sure to pack the following 5 items.

1. ID, Cash, and Bank Cards

You should never leave home without these important items. Even if you happen to lose your smartphone, you will still be able to get around if you have access to cash and your ID. A good idea would be to invest in a waterproof wallet or pouch to store these items in.

2. Sunscreen

Southern California is blessed with sunshine for the greater part of the year. While this is perfect for outdoor activities, there is a potential downside in terms of sun exposure risk. On a day without cloud cover, the ultraviolet (UV) ray index in San Diego could easily reach levels between six and seven, which is considered high. Once the ferry is halfway across the Bay, the UV index could jump higher than seven, which would require greater protection. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, and be sure to bring sunglasses as well.

3. Photo Equipment

If you are an amateur or professional photographer, you’ll certainly want to bring your equipment on this scenic trip. The San Diego Bay and the skyline are very photogenic once the ferry gets underway, and the same goes for the approach to Coronado. If your smartphone takes good pictures, you will want to use something better than Instagram on this trip. Think about installing mobile apps such as Adobe Lightroom or Pixlr before you sail.

4. Casual Clothing

Southern California fashion tends to be relaxed. If you take the ferry to Coronado while San Diego is under the meteorological effects of El Niño, you will more than likely need a jacket once the coastal breeze hits you as you sail across the Bay.

5. Toiletries and Medicines

As this is a day trip, you will want to carry a backpack or a larger purse with some essential supplies in terms of health and hygiene. If you are traveling as a group, two backpacks may be required. Prescription medications should be packed in waterproof cases or at least ziplock bags. Although the ferry voyage tends to be calm and stable, heavy currents can be experienced in the San Diego Bay from time to time. If you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to pack medication that contains dimenhydrinate as the active ingredient. Other items to pack include bottled water, aspirin, deodorant, skin lotion, and lip balm.

You might be fortunate enough to be graced with a constant view of Coronado Island if you purchase one of the beautiful condos, penthouses, or lofts in Marina San Diego.
