Spring is the most magical season in Downtown San Diego (along with summer, fall, and winter)! Take advantage of this wonderful city we call home and head over to any of these fun springtime events.

Cherry Blossom Festival

March 5-6

Today and tomorrow, participate in “Hanami” at this annual event, honoring Japanese heritage. Hanami is a traditional custom of picnicking in a cherry grove. Approximately 150 trees will showcase their lacy pink blooms. The festival includes Japanese street food, a beer and sake garden, traditional drumming, and karate demonstrations. Kids will be tickled pink by the play zone, offering crafts and games. Local vendors will be selling Asian-themed gifts. While at the festival, stroll the enchanting garden paths. Linger at the ceremonial gate, bonsai exhibit, and teahouse. Visit with the fish in the koi pond, and relax in the Zen garden.

Best Coast Beer Fest

March 12

Hosted at Embarcadero Park in the Marina District, this over-the-top beer fest supports Cancer for College, a non-profit organization awarding college scholarships to cancer patients and survivors. Over 80 craft breweries will supply 200 types of beer. While savoring frosty samples, you’ll learn about the art of producing quality craft beer. Pair your brew with tasty cuisine from the food truck alley, then settle in to enjoy the live music and bay breezes. The event also features a movie screening in the eveningThe general admission fee entitles you to unlimited beer samples, a souvenir tasting cup, and entrance between either 1-4pm or 5-8pm. Hot Chocolate Expo and Race

March 20

Slip into your favorite sneaks to join “America’s Sweetest Race.” While being treated to delectable sweets, you’ll be supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities. Proceeds will benefit the “Home-Away-From-Home” project. This program enables families with hospitalized children to stay close by at little or no cost.

At the finish line, you’ll be congratulated and honored at a Post-Race Party. Your reward includes a finisher’s medal, musical entertainment, hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, and dipping treats.

Balboa Park Earth Fair

April 17 

Earth Fair is an environmental extravaganza held annually in the park. This year’s event will host 300 exhibitors, an arts and crafts show, four entertainment venues, a Children’s Activity Area, Earth Parade, food pavilion, and Cleaner Car Concourse.

Exhibitors are businesses, government programs, and organizations that support our environment. Some of the topics presented include organic gardening, alternative energy vehicles, ecotourism, clean water, and healthcare.
